Old ISE virtual machines

M. Wisely

Hi

We're running ISE 2.3 and we have 2 virtual machines that are the original type of VM (ISE-VM-K9), is there a way to move to the newer type of VM without having to purchase new VMs? We're looking to upgrade beyond 2.3 and I'm fairly sure I've come across a document that said it was possible but I can't find it now.

Thanks

Hi @M. Wisely,

@Amine ZAKARIAgave you technical details about upgrade path, and @Marcelo Morais gave you an overview of new VMs.

What is missing in this thread is a fact that you must have Cisco suport attached on this deployment, in order to be entitled to proceed with an upgrade. Make sure that you already have support, before proceeding furhter, which might be challenging, as ISE v2.3 is already EoL since June last year.

If you by any chance still have support (since for product ID ISE-VM-K9 is also EoS), as it is supported by February 2022., you should reach back to Cisco, asking them to update your product ID to either R-ISE-VMM-K9= or R-ISE-VMS-K9= (and for other licenses that you might have).

BR,

Milos

Hello @M. Wisely ,

You can upgrade directly from 2.3 to 2.7, FYI the latest Golden Star version of ISE is 3.0, if you want to upgrade to 3.0 you can only upgrade directly starting from the version 2.4 and later.

Upgrade Path 2.7

Single-step Upgrade

You can directly upgrade to 2.7, from any of the following releases:

  • Cisco ISE, Release 2.2

  • Cisco ISE, Release 2.3

  • Cisco ISE, Release 2.4

  • Cisco ISE, Release 2.6

The link to the 2.7 document :

Upgrade Path 3.0

Single-step Upgrade

You can directly upgrade to 3.0, from any of the following releases:

  • Cisco ISE, Release 2.4

  • Cisco ISE, Release 2.6

  • Cisco ISE, Release 2.7

The link to the 3.0 document :

Hi @Amine ZAKARIA

Thanks for your reply, our virtual appliance models are not supported beyond 2.3 so we need to replace them and we're trying to avoid spending capital if possible.

Hello @M. Wisely ,

Build up fresh ISE VM's, if you have support contract you can contact licensing@cisco.com to migrate your licenses.
FYI Cisco gives you 90 days evaluation in the new ISE installation.

Hi @M. Wisely ,

beyond what @Amine ZAKARIA said ... please take a look at: ISE Ordering Guide - Simplified VM License.

Hope this helps !!!
