Standalone node upgrade from 2.1 to 2.4

We have a standlone ISE node running version 2.1 and we are planning to updagrade this to either 2.3 or 2.4. We are thinking of taking a snapshot of the existing server and build a new server (with a different IP and host) for upgrade purpose. I was looking for information on the licensing, can the same license be used on the new server for the upgrade or should that be changed to use the evaluation license? I read the ISE licensing is flexible for upgrade purposes, can someone please suggest? Should we notify GLO on this?

The UDI Serial is not affected by doing an upgrade

When you build a new VM and install ISE from OVA or ISO, then the ISE installer will generate a new unique UDI Serial Number.  This means that your existing Traditional license won't work on the new ISE node because of the UDI Serial mismatch.

All you need to do is to re-home the license on the Cisco Licensing portal.

If you had Smart Licensing then none of this matters (not tied to a UDI).

Does it apply for upgrade as well? We are using the traditional license.

Also note that ISE does not support VM snapshots.  Backup and restore would be the method to use.

We developed a new instance for 2.4. Did not take the upgrade route.
