Any guides for advanced SYSLOG functionality?

I want to increase my skills in using SYSLOG, I've had some luck in basic usage, but cnan't even really log things like incoming telnet sessions. Any guides or tutorials out there any one may know of that hass some deep dive or more involved/advanced usage?
