Core-Switch as normal Switch?

Hello everyone,

recently we upgraded our CoreSwitches because they were EOL.

Our old switches were Cisco Catlyst 4500.

Is there a way to degrade them to normal switches?

Thanks in advance!

There is nothing called degrade to normal switch or access switch.

Any switch can act as an access switch or distributed switch or core switch, depending on where you place the switch. ( also depends on the requirement for business, what model to use as a core switch).

Erase the config to factory default and configure as a normal switch as you looking to deploy.

make sure you upgrade to the latest stable version before you use it, even it was EOL, still has live until it dies completely ( so your returns are 100%).

Due to some bug, just be sure to make sure it's not exposed publicly to the internet.

How to Ask The Cisco Community for Help

Hello,

it also depends on what you have currently configured on the switch, and which modules you have installed. Can you post the output of:

sh ver

sh run

of one of the switches ?

Huh?

As @balaji.bandi describes, a "core-switch" is a role based on its placement within your topology.

The only difference between access, distribution and/or core switches, generally, is their capacity and/or features relative to other switches, within the (same) classical three tier topology.  I.e. a core switch is usually equal or "better" than a distribution switch, which in turn, is usually equal or "better" than an access switch.

Sometimes the same switch model is used for multiple tiers within the topology.

Sometimes, especially with modular switches, like a 4500, "better" components are used in switches "higher" in the topology (the latter is likely why @Georg Pauwen in inquiring about what's installed in your 4500).

the name of SW
access agg or Core is name give to SW according to it function and position in your topology.
look to table below check function for each SW in topology
