I was instructed to "write erase" and reload before beginning the initial configuration of a new Cisco 2900 router. When I connected via console, the default username and password "cisco" "cisco" worked. So I issued write erase and then reloaded. After the reload, it prompted for the username and password but this time it did not accept "cisco" "cisco". Any advice?

The new devices comes with a one time username and password. After write erase you shouldn't have saved the config.
Please try for password recovery now.
