Do I have enough memory for a 4Mb IOS image (12.2(3) IOS) if i have a Cisco 1600 Router with 8Mb ram onboard and 4Mb RAM on SIMM?
Currently I'm using an older IOS version 12.0(9) - it has 2.2 MB in flash and i can run it reliably.
here is my memory extras "show version command":
!
!
ROM: System Bootstrap, Version 12.0(3)T, RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1)
ROM: 1600 Software (C1600-RBOOT-R), Version 12.0(3)T, RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1)
Router uptime is 4 hours, 3 minutes
System restarted by reload
System image file is "flash:c1600-y-mz.120-9.bin"
cisco 1605 (68360) processor (revision C) with 9216K/3072K bytes of memory.
Processor board ID 16291474, with hardware revision 00000002
Bridging software.
X.25 software, Version 3.0.0.
2 Ethernet/IEEE 802.3 interface(s)
System/IO memory with parity disabled
8192K bytes of DRAM onboard 4096K bytes of DRAM on SIMM
System running from RAM
7K bytes of non-volatile configuration memory.
4096K bytes of processor board PCMCIA flash (Read/Write)
Configuration register is 0x2102

HERE IS MY FLASH:
!
!
Router#sh flash
PCMCIA flash directory:
File Length Name/status
1 2251855 c1600-y-mz.120-9.bin
[2251920 bytes used, 1942384 available, 4194304 total]
4096K bytes of processor board PCMCIA flash (Read/Write)
!
!
================================================
my target IOS image has 4,079,616 bytes so it seems to fit in FLASH
================================================
ALSO MY "SHOW MEMORY COMMAND" :
!
Router#sh memory
Head Total(b) Used(b) Free(b) Lowest(b) Largest(b)
Processor 24D7884 4360060 851236 3508824 3283752 3283740
I/O 2900000 3145728 204196 2941532 2941532 2941532
!
Please help me with an advice. Should I upgrade or I don't have enough memory for decompressing the image after boot sequence.
Thanks in advance

Hello
cisco recommends the min flash & dram before you download any software. I had just logged in to see your case and found the following:
1) 12.2.3g IP software c1600-y-mz.122-3g.bin - 4MB flash/10MB DRAM
2) 12.2.3g IP PLUS c1600-sy-mz.122-3g.bin - 6MB flash / 12M DRAM
So, I think a normal IP version of the IOS given above will fit into your router. All other IOS will not fit.
hope this helps..

Thanks for reply Raj.
I found c1600-sy-mz.122-3.bin - 4MB (4,079,616 bytes) and file fits in my flash memory but I'm afraid to "flash it" because I'm not sure if it will fully decompress in my 12 Mb of ram.
I'm waiting your reply

hi cotiso,
Cisco recommends the following for the IOS c1600-sy-mz.122-3.bin :
Flash - 6mb
DRAM - 12 MB
Do not use this IOS for your router. You can try putting the IOS that I had specified on my previous post. What features do you exactly need ??

Dear Mr. Raj,
I just unloaded into flash c1600-sy-mz.122-3.bin and router seems to work like a charm with different services enable.
My PCMCIA flash card is only 4MB but it seem to fit in.
Probably CISCO is refering to a slightly larger version of 12.2(3).
----------Extras for my show flash----------

Router>sh flash
PCMCIA flash directory:

4096K bytes of processor board PCMCIA flash (Read/Write)

Thanks again for advices.
