LMS 4.0 DCR Server Error

Good day.

I have a fresh install of LMS 4.0 on Windows Server 2008 Standart SP2. I have one NIC with static IP configuration. I also disabled DHCP client.

The problem is follows: when I go to

Inventory - Device Administration - Add/Import/Manage Devices, I always get this error:

Error in communicating with DCR Server.

DCR Server may be down. Please start the DCR Server and then refresh the page.

Reload server/ Daemon Manager dont solve this.

I try to beat this problem 2 days already. Second uninstall also doesnt solve the problem.. Please somebody help!

PS Some history. About a week ago I tried to clear log files which was 270gb (syslog.log) and after that restarted the server. And all inventory devices suddenly disappear! I could find it from search menu but cant access - cisco works said that there is no such a device in Device Repository or I havent enough right to view it (but i logged as admin). And after this i failed to add any device in Inventory. So I reinstall Cisco Works and get that DCR error..

Hi,

It sounds like you are running into permissions issues.

Here are the basic install best practices:

1) Install as a local administrator (this means create a local account  Members Of "Administrators") and log in and use this account.

2) My Computer -> Properties -> Advanced -> Environment Variables

Set the USER TMP and TEMP to a shorten path like

C:\\Windows\temp

3) Make sure you have FIXED pagefile size like 8182

My Computer -> Properties -> Advanced -> Performance Options -> Advanced

4) May need to reboot, certainly log out an back in to make sure step 2 applies.

5) Stop all anti-virus and firewall during the installation

* NOTES: Anti-virus can be re-enabled after installation, but you should  EXCLUDE the NMSROOT directory as long as LMS is installed on the  server. DEP should remain off (that is, set to only protect critical  Windows system files) as long as LMS is installed on the server.

* If Internet Information Services (IIS) is detected on your system and  if you have continued the installation with IIS services, you cannot use  the port number 443 for HTTPS. Instead, you must use the port numbers  ranging from 1026 to 65535 for HTTPS to avoid this conflict.

When performing the installation, make sure these two steps are followed:

* Install from original, locally attached media

* NEVER abort the installation after the installer says not to

It may not always be possible to install from original, locally attached  media (especially on VMs). But you should avoid from installing over  the network as hiccups can cause bad installations. If you are  installing on a virtual machine, convert the DVD to an ISO image, then  mount that within the VM.

Here is the document detailing all ports needed to be allowed (excluded from policy) for LMS 4.0

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/partner/docs/net_mgmt/ciscoworks_lan_management_solution/4.0/install/guide/prereq.html#wp1075786

General Notes:

If you want to upgrade the operating system from Windows 2003 or Windows 2008 to Windows 2008 R2, you must first  complete upgrading the operating system, and then install the LMS 4.0.x Windows 2008 R2 patch.

- You can install the LMS 4.0.x Windows 2008 R2 patch only on LMS 4.0.x and not on the lower version of LMS.

- You cannot install Integration Utility and HP Open View 7.x or 8.x on Windows 2008 or Windows 2008 R2 servers.
