Hi all, when I want to make sure that a problem is the server, not the network, do I monitor the repsonse time to the server againts the network, or do you monitor the application somehow? whats the best tool foor this ?

Depends on the problem. For example Web or FTP access is slow, it may be related to server resource problem (CPU, Memory, Swap, Paging) or application tuning (throttling, connection number) most of this can be monitor by MRTG, Cricket, Webalizer, etc...
