MTU must match only in OSPF so that when they exchange database files there are no issues.

BTW, Martin's reference does also mention OSPF's configuration command ip ospf mtu-ignore might be used, to override this behavior, but that's not recommended.  If curious, see https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/ip/open-shortest-path-first-ospf/119384-technote-ospf-00.html for more information.
