Prime 1.4.0.45 - Application restore failed

We have Appliance Backups (full backups) for a Cisco Prime 1.4.0.45 installation .

  • ncs_appliance_backup-150722-1900.tar.gpg
  • ncs_appliance_backup-150729-1900.tar.gpg

The hardware was replaced and the Cisco Prime operating system was re-installed from DVD. However when trying to restore the Appliance Backup, the following error occurs:

ncs/admin# restore ncs_appliance_backup-150729-1900.tar.gpg repository myrepo
Restore will perform a reboot to successfully complete. Continue? (yes/no) [yes] ? yes
Initiating restore.  Please wait...
Stage 1 of 9: Transferring backup file ...
  -- complete.
Stage 2 of 9: Decrypting backup file ...
  -- complete.
Stage 3 of 9: Unpacking backup file ...
  -- complete.
Backup file is an Appliance backup. Please use application backup using the following command:
backup <backup file name> repository <repository name> application NCS
% Application restore failed

There are no Application Backups. The only backups are the Appliance Backups. Is there a trick to restoring the appliance from an Appliance Backup? I would be surprised if Cisco provides a backup method that cannot be restored! Why provide it in the first place :)

I have decrypted one of the Appliance Backups and it contains a TAR. Within the TAR is the directory backup/NCS containing WCS.zip and SignFile. Can I turn this into an Application Backup? Or is there a procedure for extracting and restoring the database?

I've run into this as well. You need to use the same command with "application NCS" at the end.

@Nathanhand,

How you resolved this problem? Were you able to restore appliance backup.

No, the appliance backup could not be restored. A Cisco engineer was similarly stumped, his only advice being we should have used an Application Backup. The backups were setup by a previous Cisco engineer who advised we should use Appliance Backups. Obviously never tried to restore a backup before leaving. The Appliance Backups were all worthless.

Very disappointed with the outcome.
