problem with the aironet 2700 series APs

i have a couple of of these and are trying to put them to use at home but are having some trouble resetting and communicating with them. basically:

i use a crossover cable and putty to try and connect to the ap but i cant seem to get it into "config mode" if that makes sence.

i am running out of ideas and are not a pro in any way or form. i do though have quite good knowledge about it and some networking.

any help appreciated!

If you can't get into config mode, then the APs must be running CAPWAP image.
Do you have a WLC or Mobility Express or not?
Do you have the autonomous IOS for the AP (TAR file extension)?

i am not familiar with capwap and have looked into mobility express but was unable to download the software as you have to be a cisco parter to get it of their site. 

and i do not have the IOS. where do i get that?

i think i have found the required software: https://software.cisco.com/download/home/286256842/type/284180979/release/15.3.3-JI3

but again its not possible to download it? is this really the case that cant download anything from the site unless youre certified partner?
