SNMPv3 - snmp-server host traps VS. snmp-server host version

Dear Cisco-Community,

can anyone explain the difference between those two commands with regard to sending SNMP traps? They seem to work both, but what is the difference?

snmp-server host 1.1.1.1 traps version 3 priv WHATEVER
snmp-server host 1.1.1.1 version 3 priv WHATEVER

Thank you!

Hi Frank,

1. )SWITCH(config)#snmp-server host 1.1.1.1 ?

WORD SNMPv1/v2c community string or SNMPv3 username

informs Send Inform messages to this host

traps Send Trap messages to this host

version SNMP version to use for notification messages

even though all of them are the same, here the important part is "snmp-server host 1.1.1.1" because this is the only way that you will send the traps/informs to your NMS Tool, the rest you can play with it .

Hope it helps!
