Test Hardware Before Deployment

Hello all. I'm trying to think of established ways to test basic functions of a router or switch prior to deployment. This is to ensure that the hardware will work as expected. Are there any methods to stress test or verify performance?

Do you send the routers and/or switches out to the site un-configured?

Thank you for the quick reply. No, we configure the devices prior to deployment. Ideally I'd be testing basic functionality before deployment, i.e. ensuring the features we need will work but the real test has been their performance under load in production. I just wondered if there was anyway to do so before putting them into such an environment.
