Third Party Applications and Cisco SDN ODL

Hi everybody,

I am fairly new to SDN via API.  I have some basics questions:

1) Let say we have two controllers:  Cisco ODL and Contrail , both support REST API on Northbound interfaces , but support different protocols on South bound interfaces. Focusing only on Southbound APIS available via REST APIS,

Can we say both Cisco ODL and Contrail support same REST APIS on south bound interfaces? If that is true, then any application say Cisco Flow manager can work with Contrail , after all it is using standard  REST APIS.

By the same token, HP SDN applications written  for REST APIS should be able to talk to any SDN controller which uses REST APIS on the southbound interfaces?

Thanks and  have a good weekend!!

Hi Sarah,

Alright, let’s dive into your questions about SDN and REST APIs.

Southbound REST APIs:

Cisco ODL and Contrail do not necessarily support the same REST APIs on their southbound interfaces. These are often different and specific to each controller.
Interoperability:

In short, while standard REST APIs on the northbound interface offer some level of interoperability, southbound interfaces are a different story and are often more controller-specific. It’s always a good idea to check the specific APIs and protocols supported by the controllers and ensure compatibility with your applications and network devices.

Hope this clears things up a bit! Feel free to ask if you have more questions.
