Tool to monitor broadband speed - regular interval

I would like to check for the best tool to continuously monitor your broadband speed.

A log should be kept to analysis.

The objective is to check the performance of the connection  on a certain period.

Freeware is preferred.

what exactly do you mean under "broadband speed"? Current utilization or maximum possible speed from one end to another?
