Upgrading a Network

Hi,

I have a very daunting task that of upgrading an existing network for a high school. I need some advice on the best method to do this.

The existing situation is this:

1. A peer to peer network

2. Star topology (Cat. 5 UTP)

3. Fast Ethernet switches (10/100)

4. Wireless connection to ISP

4. 5 existing switches in each department (5 depts)

What is required:

1. A Client/Server network as the network is to be use to share internet access and a school management application

2. 3 Additional Computers

3. Virus Protection Solution

4. Windows 2000 Server Operation System

Observations:

1. Cables are not routed in raceways

2. Cable that leads from an office building to the auditorium is run aerially between buildings

3. The need to replace a network switch due to "burn out"

What I am proposing is the following:

1. The purcahse of an additional switch to accomadate the purchase of 2 computers that will be housed in the auditorium

2. The purchase of a patch panel to connect dept switches to the main switch

3. Run cables in conduits for neatness and preservation

4. Purchase of a UPS for each switch to eliminate the "burn out" situation

5. Purchase Norton Antivirus enterprise edition

I plan on placing information outlets in each dept which will run from the patch panel that houses that main switch to the switches in each dept.

Could you please give me some advise if I am giving the client the best solution

You can have a look at the Cisco's design strategy page for school networks

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/strategy/education/primary.html

Also you can make use of Solution Designer for getting idea on what more you might need
