what is jump server or Jump Box and what is its use or purpose

Hi there,
A jump server is a server which network security policy permits access to from remote networks whilst denying access to rest of the network in which the jump server resides. The idea being that users must ssh/ rdp onto this jump server and from there they can then pivot to the remainder of the network. This makes managing a network security policy for incoming network connections easier.
cheers,
Seb.

That is a centralized management server or device from which you can connect to all your network devices. Instead of adding complete IP subnets to an ACL or so you can add one or two ip adresses. It is also called a "stepping stone".
You can SSH or RDP to this server depends on which setup you choose, MS or UNIX or maybe even a Cisco router.

A jump server is defined as a system on a network that accesses and manages all the devices in a different zone of security. It is a rugged and monitoring device that spans two different security zones and enables a controlled means of access between them.
Example - Managing a DMZ from trusted networks.
