Hi
I'm not sure you are missing anything. Which version of software are you running ?
I have just tested with v2.3(2) and it put both routes into the routing table. However it may be that later versions act as a router does ie.
if you configure 2 static routes for the same route on a router but one of them has a higher adminstrative distance then only one route will show up in the routing table when you do a "sh ip route" . So from your example
ip route 192.168.12.0 255.255.255.0 192.168.21.3
ip route 192.168.12.0 255.255.255.0 192.168.21.4 100
only the first route will appear with a "sh ip route". If the first route is removed from the routing table because the next hop is no longer reachable then the other route will be installed in the routing table.
That is how a router behaves and the route with the higher AD is called a "floating static". It may well be that the version of code you are running on your FWSM behaves the same way.
Simplest way to find out would be to remove your first route ie.
no route inside 192.168.12.0 255.255.255.0 192.168.21.3
and see if the second route enters the routing table.

JON,
What happened is that i enabled 2 hsrp instance on the msfc coonections to the fwsm.
That is the 192.168.21.3 active for core 1
and 192.168.21.4 active on core 2
my objective is that if vlan 12 (192.168.12.0) is down on core 1, i want my fwsm to go to the floating static route which is pointing to 192.168.21.4 (core 2)

Hi
Nothing wrong with what you are trying to do.
Could you test by shutting down 192.168.21.3 and see if the other route then shows in the routing table ?
