ASA Failover Hardware configuration

Hello everybody,

I have an ASA5510 firewall with the following HW configuration:

Hardware:   ASA5510, 256 MB RAM, CPU Pentium 4 Celeron 1600 MHz
Internal ATA Compact Flash, 256MB
BIOS Flash M50FW080 @ 0xffe00000, 1024KB

This platform has a Base license.

and another ASA with the following:

Hardware:   ASA5510, 1024 MB RAM, CPU Pentium 4 Celeron 1600 MHz,

Internal ATA Compact Flash, 256MB

BIOS Flash M50FW016 @ 0xfff00000, 2048KB

This platform has an ASA 5510 Security Plus license.

I'd like to configure those firewalls with an active/standby failover.

Is it enough to upgrade the first firewall with a 1GB memory and a security plus license or do i have to mind the differences between BIOS Flash?

Thanks

Johnny

Hi,

I think the differences that you have would not stop the failover from working although you would see alerts on on the ASA failover system about the mismatch but the HA should still work.

Also , make sure you check the modules on the units.

They should match exactly.

The BIOS version differences are fine.

The 5510 is getting very old and won't be supported much longer. The last software you can run on on will only be 9.1(x).

I know ASA5510 is very old but my costumer wants me to configure the HA using a pair of already owned machines.

These machines are both without any module at all, and they should run the 8.2.5 IOS (my costumer wants this).

I think I only need a 1GB memory and license upgrade to security plus for one machine.

I hope that BIOS differences  won't prevent me to configure HA.

Hi,

Yes , BIOS difference would not cause any issues with the HA pair.

Thanks and Regards,
