is it possible to upgrade an ASA firewall without IPS feature to support it.
for example: from ASA5510-BUN-K9 to ASA5510-AIP10-K9.
is it a software upgrade only or must we add also some hardware?

You need Cisco AIP SSM module (Hadware) for Adding IPS functionality. You also need Cisco IPS Service (Annual signature subscription) to update the signatures.
AIP-SSM-10 works with ASA5510
