Cisco ASA 5520 8.2(4) - Flash Error

Hi, I am unable to view disk1: in the ASA5520 box.

stby# show disk1:

%Error show disk1: (No such device)

I tried using the fsck command as well.

stby# fsck disk1:

%Error checking disk1: ()

I looked up Cisco document on the specific problem and that is all they had for a solution.

Is it related to an IOS bug on this specific version? I tried the same compact flash in a cisco router and it works fine. I tried the same compact flash in a cisco asa5520 running version 12.4 and it worked fine.

Any suggestions?

What size CF card is it? (256 or 512 MB, yes?) It should be FAT file system formatted.

Does the ASA recognize it when you try "show file system"?

You must mean something else when you say "...cisco asa5520 running version 12.4 and it worked fine." ASA software only goes up to Version 8.4(3) for 5500 series.

Sorry that was a typo, it is actually 8.2(4).

I did some random tests and swapped the flash with another asa5520 with a newer code 8.4 and when I did an erase disk1: it actually erased the disk and wrote it in FAT32 file system or FAT only I am not too sure.

When I put it back in the problematic asa5520 it once again gave me the same error.

I am using two CP both of them don't work one is ScanDisk 256MB and the other is a standard Cisco CP 256MB.

I don't know if it's a CP issue or the IOS issue or the asa5520 acting up. I notice when I put the CP in the asa that reads it correctly turns off the Flash light as soon as I put it in. The other one takes some time to turn off the light? Is it significant? I am unable to find anything beyong fsck and erase/format? Besides I know the difference between erase and format but does it apply to asa as well and which file system does ASA have on it's disk1?

The ASA filesystem is FAT format.

Your problem sound pretty quirky. None of the bugs appearing in Bug Toolkit appear to document behavior such as you're seeing. I'd suspect it's hardware-related (i.e. the ASA itself) since the same card works in a different ASA. I imagine you'd get nowhere with TAC since you're trying to use a non-Cisco CF card.

Let me make sure, I can format a CF on a PC and use in an ASA5520 as long as it is FAT?

Can I format the CF in a cisco 1800 router and then use it on the ASA 5520?
