I am trying to update the ASDM on an ASA 5510. The version on there now (5.8.0) doesn't seem to like Java 7. When I try to set a new image:
(config#) asdm image disk0:/asdm671.bin
Device Manager image set, but not a valid image file disk0:/asdm671.bin
I get the above error. I also tried the same command with a 7.3.2 image.
The only thing I did different from the usual procedure is that I used scp to transfer the file instead of tftp. Could that be causing the error? I can turn on tftp on my laptop if I have to.
# show version
Cisco Adaptive Security Appliance Software Version 7.0(6)
Device Manager Version 5.0(6)
Compiled on Tue 22-Aug-06 13:22 by builders
System image file is "disk0:/asa706-k8.bin"
Config file at boot was "startup-config"

Have you checked if your ASA version and the new ASDM are compatible?

I didn't know about that page, thank you.
It looks like the asa is not compatible with a newer adsm. I guess I'll have to see if I remember how to set up a VPN from the CLI.
If it was easy, anybody could do it...

Or you can just update your ASA to version 8 or later.
