Is it ok to run a snapshot for the FMC VM? It seems that if I were to take a snapshot the log file would continue to grow rapidly due to all the database writes pertaining to connection, host, discovery events etc If completing a major version upgrade what would be the best way to backup and restore to that point in time? A full .vmdk backup and then using scheduled integrated backup instead of snapshots???

Snapshots are not supported for FMCv. I have successfully reverted snapshots but the official way of doing it would be scheduling a backup job and just dump the backup to some share. When FMC breaks just revert from the backup and you are done.
In case a upgrade of FMC fails you would need to setup a new FMC and get it to the version of the backup file and then start the restore. If you would like to save some time you may try to revert a snapshot first if your FMC upgrade broke the system and if that does not work out either continue with the supported method
