How often does FWSM Replicate

How often does a FWSM 2.5 and 3.1 replicate? Do they only do it when something changes, or do they replicate on a regular timed basis? we saw this in our Syslog and a few minutes later the FWSM stopped responding. We are troubleshooting and not sure if they are related.
