IPS 5.0 show ver ==> the serial number is empty

One of my friend says that when he updated the IDS

4250 form 4.1 to 5.0 , but the serial number is empty

when enter the show ver command , what is wrong ?

Is the serial number = service tag number on outside box ?

Yes. The serial number for the IDS-4235 and IDS-4250 appliances is the same as the service tag number shown on the outside of the box. It is also stored in firmware on the system. I am not sure why it is not showing up when you run the show ver command.
