So are the ports in the back of the 501 a layer 2 switch or a layer 1 hub? Some documentation says it's a switch, some calls it a hub. I can't build a VLAN on it, but does each port have it's own collision domain?

it's a switch, so each port is supposed to have it's own collision domain.
