VPN thru Cisco 2600

I am a small ISP and have setup a VPN for a client useing SonicWALL VPN devices. My question is: do I have to make any changes on my router to accomodate this VPN? Do I have to make any changes to speed their connection up?

I have the VPN setup. They have a T-1 to the internet (provided by Sprint). I have supplied them with a 512kb wireless link to the net (provided by Qwest). I have tested the VPN tunnel and can get 400 kbps ofr better up and down, but the connection is slower than their 56k dedicated line.

I guess you are talking about the core routers inside the ISP cloud. If you are talking about the core routers inside your ISP cloud, I think you do not have to configure anyting extra for the VPN tunnel. All the VPN traffic (encrypted) will be tunnelled through the core routers.

I am not sure, but the slowness could be due to the encryption and decryption at the VPN end points. If you have implemented stronger algorithms, it may take more time to encrypt and decrypt. Also slowness could be due to bit errors due to noiesy lines.

The process of encrypting and decrypting VPN data can take a serious toll on fairly slow connections. One of the best decisions we ever made was to enforce a policy that requires remote locations to use a 2600 router with the AIM Encryption module. We have seen a 25% increase in encrypted bandwidth with these modules in place. For more information click here:
