what does asterisk mean in show clock

Hello,

I noticed there is an asterisk(*) in show clock. No idea what it means. I think there should be no asterisk here normally.

sensor# sh clock
*09:09:28 GMT+08:00 Mon May 10 2010

Does anybody has the information about that?

The "asterisk" means that you have not configured NTP clock for your IPS and the clock has been configured manually.

Hello,

I have configured ntp TIME.WINDOWS.COM but still shows the asterisk.

Also, i have the exact same configuration regarding ntp ,in the same site and in one switch has the correct UTC time and in the other it's one hour back.

Any ideas?

If the switch's source interface (usually an SVI used for management or potentially a dedicated management port) can resolve the address and reach the configured NTP server via udp/123 (ntp) then it should work.

We usually don't configure a DNS name since that adds an extra layer of dependency (DNS name resolution) to the configuration.
