Core issue
The media type does not appear, or is blank in the output of the show interface status command. However, the interface works fine and there are no connectivity issues.
These are some of the reasons for this problem:

- The GBIC contains some erroneous reading of the IDPROM.
- The interface is configured as a Layer 3 (L3) interface.
Resolution
Verify the serial number on the GBIC to ascertain that a Cisco GBIC is used.
If the switchport command is issued to configure the interface as an L3 interface, physically take out the GBIC and then insert the GBIC back into the slot. Then issue these commands:
These commands must now display the GBIC type.
