This event had place on Tuesday 22nd, June 2021 at 9hrs PDT

Introduction

This session provided a broad overview of the overall unified communications solutions available on the Catalyst 8000 family. Learn about the modular voice capabilities of the Catalyst 8300/8200 Edge platforms including the newer additions such as NIM-PVDM and C-SM-NIM adapter. Explore the voice capabilities of the platforms in SD-WAN mode ( (industry’s only SD-WAN solution that offers support for IP telephony). Decipher the key comparisons between Catalyst 8300/8200 Edge platforms and ISR 4000 Series when deployed as a unified communications platform. Leave the session with a clear view on how to choose the best platform for your voice infrastructure.

Live Questions

Q:How will licensing work for Air-Gapped Customers, who can't connect to the internent? Can the licenses be hosted directly on the Cat 8K, or do you need to have another server for licening?

A: There are mechanisms to handle the air gap to be able to do a periodic manual sync of licenses to the online license service. For Air-gapped network, you can manually download and upload licensing data using offline workflow in Smart license using Policy.

Q:Any plan to support CME?

A:CME is supported.

Q:What is NIM PVDM module?

A:This is a NIM which hosts PVDM modules for DSP functions. There are no interfaces on the module, it specifically host PVDM based DSPs.NIM-PVDM is the Next-generation digital signal processor (DSP) module with an onboard DSP daughter card which eliminates the need to procure an additional T1/E1 NIM card in order to utilize a PVDM4 chip for IP media services. Find more here: https://community.cisco.com/t5/collaboration-voice-and-video/introducing-nim-pvdm-dsp-voice-module/ba-p/4176223.

Q:Can NIM PVDMs be shared between T1 and DSP?

A:No

Q:Is there SLR/PLR Licening Option for Cat8K, like there is for CUCM for Air-Gapped Customers?

A: Cat8k with Smart license policy(SLP), you have offline workflow which is air-gap in nature. No SLR/PLR in SLP.Please, take a look at the FAQ that we have posted:https://community.cisco.com/t5/networking-documents/smart-licensing-using-policy-routing-a-simplified-licensing/ta-p/4405647.

Q:When will the DSP Calculator be updated to include the Catalyst 8K routers? Specially, I'm speaking about https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/applications/dsp-calc.html?

A:The tool has been refreshed - entire code has been re-written that includes new platforms and other mistakes that were present in the current tool. In fact, I wanted to post it before today's session. Will be posted before end of this week. You can use the same link.

Q:Is the PVDM module on the NIM swappable or upgradeable?

A:The NIM-PVDM modules do not support an upgrade of the number of DSPs installed in the field. Use appropriate SKU

Q:There are no slots on the 8K motherboard for a PVDM module?

A:Correct.PVDMs are supported on the NIM modules for voice functions. There are no PVDM slots on the motherboad in the Catalyst 8000 platforms as there were on the ISR4000 series.

Q:Is opus codec supported on NIM-PVDM?

A: Yes. In 17.6.1.

Q:Is MGCP supported in controller mode?

A:MGCP is not supported in controller mode.

Q:SRST license will be subscription as well?

A:DNA licensing is mandatory for all services/features on C8Ks. SRST feature will be covered part of DNA-Advantage license with Network advantage perpetual stack in autonomous mode and with DNA-Adv in SD-WAN mode. You would still need L-SRST licenses to add.

Q:What is the difference between autonomous mode and controller mode?

A:Fundamentally autonomous mode is CLI based configuration as our routers have traditionally been managed. Controller mode is management by vManage as part of a SDWAN deployment.

Q:What is the recommended replacement for 4351?

A:No direct replacement for 4351, but recommend to go for C8300-2N2S-6T model as the replacement.

Q:Will the Cat 8000V support on-board transcoding via software?

A:No, this is not supported. Link: https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/ios-xml/ios/voice/cube/configuration/cube-book/voi-virtual-cube.html .

Q:Are there plans to EOL the ISR4K and/or the CSRv1000?

A:Of coures they will be EoL eventually as part of our product life cycle. They will continue to have support after EoL as we have with previous products.

Q:What is the current timeline/version for CUBE support in SD-WAN mode?

A:Roadmap. no ETA yet.

Q:Is there any web browser for configuration instead of cli?

A:Find the answer to this question in the Ask Me Anything for this session.

Q:Does/Will the Cat8K support MS Teams Direct Routing in SD-WAN / Controller Mode?

A:Find the answer to this question in the Ask Me Anything for this session.

Q:Is the NFR for 8000v similar to that of the CSR1000v?

A:Find the answer to this question in the Ask Me Anything for this session.

Q:Can the CAT8K be used as an SBC for both Voice and Video Calls? Are there any limitations/shortcomings on the Video side if using it for an SBC? The customer wants a Single Edge and does not want both CUBE and Expressway, they currently use a competitor product for an SBC as a Single Voice Video Edge.

A:Find the answer to this question in the Ask Me Anything for this session.

Q:Can the Cat 8K do SRTP to SRTP Transcoding? The ISR4K could not do SRTP to SRTP Transcoding, so one of our customers went with a competitor who could do SRTP to SRTP transcoding for use as an SBC instead of CUBE.

A:Find the answer to this question in the Ask Me Anything for this session.

Q:Are there any plans for a COP file or DevPack to enable 8300 support on CUCM v11.5(1)?

A:Find the answer to this question in the Ask Me Anything for this session.
