When connecting a switch to another switch, a crossover cable must be used. This applies for connecting all like devices, including these:
- switch to switch
- workstation to workstation
- workstation to router
- switch to hub
- hub to hub
- router to router
If the device has a port designated with an X and it is connected to a similar device's port without an X designation, then a straight through cable should be used. However, if ports on both sides are designated with an X, a crossover cable should be used to connect them.
For more information, including a chart of correct cables, refer to Catalyst Switch Cable, Connector, and AC Power Cord Guide.
