Maapi deref function in Python

Is there any way in Python to have the same functionality as the deref function in Java? Does anybody know if there is a plan to port it?

For some reason (probably historical), this function (maapi.deref()) is available only in the Java API. It is not present in any other API, including C, Python and Erlang. Perhaps it was added in Java because it was needed for NAVU? Not sure.

Anyhow, it is currently only present in Java.
