Do I need to whitelist subdomains, or just the top-level domain?

Hello,

If I add (say) jim.com to my whitelist, will this allow fred.jim.com as well, or do I need to add that as a separate entity?

I'm just getting started with OpenDNS and am trying to work out what's the minimum I need to add to my whitelist to get essential stuff working, without adding too much.

Thanks for any help you can give.

The domain jim.com covers this and all its subdomains like fred.jim.com in both, whitelists and blacklists.  Note, whitelisting has priority over blacklisting.  For example, if you whitelisted google.com, then blacklisting images.google.com would have no effect.

"just the top-level domain"

What you call top-level domain is not what you mean.  For the domain example.com the TLD is com, but the root domain or 2nd level domain is example.com.  Further levels are subdomains.  So you probably meant root domain, not top-level domain.

And yes, you also can black/whitelist TLDs.  So entering org would include all under the org TLD.

309368103 Thanks for the clear response. You're right, I was mixing up TLDs and root domains, but thankfully you worked out what I meant!
