Problems with 1and1.com giving 404 or 403 errors

I periodically have an issue with the domain 1and1.com giving me 404 or 403 errors when using OpenDNS. If I check the domain via http://www.isitdownrightnow.com/ or a similar site it shows as up and accessible. If I manually switch to another DNS server then I can access the site. However, while using DNS servers I get the following errors depending on what page at the domain I try to access:

403 Forbidden

You don't have permission to access / on this server.

Apache Server at 1and1.com Port 80

404 Not Found

The requested URL /xml/order/Hosting was not found on this server.

Apache Server at 1and1.com Port 80

Why would this occur for only one site?

Hard to find a reason, because I cannot reproduce this.  These 403 and 404 errors are HTTP errors, not DNS errors.  When it comes to these HTTP errors, DNS is already over and gone.  Therefore it is likely that your problems are not DNS related.

Does OpenDNS return the same IP address and other information for 1and1.com and www.1and1.com as your other DNS service?

OpenDNS:  nslookup 1and1.com. 208.67.220.220
                      nslookup www.1and1.com. 208.67.220.220

Your DNS:  nslookup 1and1.com. <YourDNSresolver>
                     nslookup www.1and1.com. <YourDNSresolver>

What OpenDNS location are you using?
nslookup -type=txt which.opendns.com. 208.67.220.220

What is your geographical location?

The problem is that www.1and1.com are using the Akamai CDN service, and they may route you to a suboptimal location.

When I perform nslookup in the terminal on my mac I get the following:

Server: 4.2.2.1
Address: 4.2.2.1#53

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: 1and1.com
Address: 74.208.4.12

I also ran OpenDNSDiagnostic.app and got the following results:

http://opendnsupdate.appspot.com/d/14745004

When I attempt to load which.opendns.com I get:

"Safari can't find server"

But I am using the standard OpenDNS server addresses: 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220

I am located in Tucker, GA 30084

"When I perform nslookup in the terminal on my mac I get the following:"

The result for 1and1.com against Level-3 was less interesting.  The www.1and1.com is hosted via CDN.  I didn't ask to publish your results.  I expected that you compare them yourself.

"I also ran OpenDNSDiagnostic.app and got the following results:"

These results are visible only to you and OpenDNS staff, not to me...  :(

""Safari can't find server""

Safari has nothing to do with this.  All to be done in a terminal window.  The domain which.opendns.com is not thought to be visited with a browser.
