random email requests to unblock porn sites

After configuring OpenDNS I have started receiving emails from people I do not know to unblock certain sites.  Have I inadvertently blocked someone else from access?

Yes, you did.  As far as I can think of, there are two scenarios where this can happen:

  • You have an outdated IP address registered with your dashboard network at https://dashboard.opendns.com/settings/ and other users are now bound to your settings.
Update the IP address information, and run an Updater going further, so that your IP address changes are reflected at your dashboard.
  • The IP address assigned to you is also assigned to others, i.e. your ISP uses shared IP addresses.  In this case you must not register it, and you should delete your network at https://dashboard.opendns.com/settings/
You still can use OpenDNS as DNS service with phishing and some malware protection, and with configuring the FamilyShield addresses you can block "adult" domains.

If your ISP uses shared IP addresses you have other options to use OpenDNS aside from only using FamilyShield, but they involve using either a Netgear router with LPC (Live Parental Controls) or one of the plans that uses OpenDNS agents to protect individual devices rather than the network based protection you are familiar with in OpenDNS Home.

Two things come to mind:

In order for you to block others the following must be true:

A. The other people you are blocking are sharing the same IP as yourself

B.The other people you are blocking are also using OpenDNS as their DNS server

Do you have members on your network other than yourself?
