DWDM deployment question

Hi,

I need to understand how to light up dark fiber connection between our campus and an upcoming datacenter (< 5 miles apart);

high-level requirement is

10 x 10Gb waves.

2 for EMC replication, 6 for NFS client traffic (engineering), 2 for general corporate IP

how would the network setup look for this? equipment-wise?

Does the 10G equipment have DWDM interfaces available as options (such as pluggable XFP or Xenpak DWDM interfaces)?

If yes,

You may be able to connect the 10x10Gb client interfaces using a pair of ONS 15216 Cisco ONS 15216 Base Red Filters. This solution is simple.

If no,

Then you could use the ONS 14545 MSTP solution, using 10G transponders to take the client interfaces and convert them to DWDM wavelengths and transport them over a pair of fibers. This solution provides more advanced management capabilities, although some additional learning required.

I've attached a generic diagram.

Not sure if this is the info you were looking for.

Dear Sir,

Please find the attached scenario.

Here I would like to know the 1 pair fiber termination to be done on which port.

Regards

Atul

The fibers can terminate on different cards depending on the network. Typically, if the node contains a booster optical amplifier, then the network fibers enter the DWDM node on this card. If the node does not have a booster amplifier, then the optical service channel card (OSC-CSM) is where the network fibers are connected.

The node configurations on the attached file are not complete. The Cisco Transport Planner software is necessary to design a functioning network and it provides a bill of materials for the correct line cards and how to cable between line cards.

If you have solved your problem fine otherwise as u said Primary oracle server for Tx connect this to Rx of one card and Backup for Rx connect that to Tx of the same otpical card.

I dont know about the redundancy of oracle server but what ever you have said in you slide then u can connect as told above. (attaching your same ppt also).

Redundancy for your SDH link will be taken care by service provider or if you own the equipment then u have to create link in your SDH box.

Although 5 miles should not be an issue, also ensure the fiber does not need to have any dispersion compensation. One other side note to using the 15216, as it is a passive mux/demux system, future growth is potentially service affecting. It could be either because you have to physically re-balance the network if services are added or removed, or if you run out of waves, to add more, you would need to break the span and insert another mux/demux. If you are looking to potentially scale, or future growth may include different service types, the 454 may be the better match.

Yes, very good points. 454 provides more future flexibility and redundancy options as well.

With 32 wavelengths, bandwidth should not be too much of a problem on the 15216. But, you never know what future demands will be!

as per my knowledge, in passive mux/demux, future growth is not service affecting. There are 16 waves in red filter and you can connect one now and second later without affecting the service. They are different ports.

Below lines are from link for 15216 in above post

"The base unit integrates two pairs of expansion ports, enabling in-service upgrades from 16 mux/demux wavelengths to 32 wavelengths. The base unit also incorporates two monitor ports, allowing the user unobtrusive access to the transmit and receive signals (see Figure 1) for monitoring or analysis"

You dont have to physically rebalance in the scenario he is using (point to point). Its a concern for service providers who keeps adding more equipments in the same ring/link.

454 is a better match if somebody has too many 1, 2 Gig links and need to be multiplexed one 10Gig. he already has 6 10G but needs to be taken few miles away. Would be lot of difference in price of 15454 and 15216.
