Guys,
I am going through a very weird situation and wondered if any of you had any ideas on how I could troubleshoot this issue.
I am running a 2960 Cisco, which has a single mode fiber cable which is connected to multiple rstp switches designed by a mining technology company.
The fiber port which connects these switches has "duplex full" written into its configuration. However, after a random amount of time, anywhere from 1 hour to 24 hours, the port is changes to operate in half duplex. This is found by doing a show interfaces status.
At no time whatsoever is there any duplex mismatch errors.
Once i notice that the port is actually operating in half duplex mode, i log into the port, do a "duplex half" then "duplex full".. the port goes back into full duplex for another 1-24 hour period.
Any ideas on why this port keeps jumping into half duplex operation? I really need this port to run in full duplex and cannot understand why the port would go into half duplex operation when the end devices should support full duplex.
Again, i never get any duplex mismatch errors.
I appreciate any troubleshooting tips you can provide.

Well, son-of-a-gun. I've never seen this vendor before. Looks like your SFP is legit.
My next suggestion would be to upgrade your IOS to 12.2(55)SE2 or later.

What the ...? I've never seen that syntax of a serial number. Is that for real?
Can you post the output to the command: "sh idprom interface Gi 1/0/25" (and 1/0/26) please?
Y'know if those SFP are NOT "Cisco" branded then that could be the reason for the issue.

Ok I downloaded the 12.2(58).... I will try installing that.
I noticed that I could have grabbed a version 15?
What is the difference between 12 and 15 ?
Thanks so much for your help.

What is the difference between 12 and 15 ?
You want an "honest" answer or an answer?
I used to run the 15.0(1) IOS. Take note I posted "used to". I had to roll back to 12.2(55)SE2 because there's a bug with IOS 15.0(1). The bug has a potential memory leak and is triggered when the switch boots up even without a config.
I've been telling people who read my post to stay away from the 15.0(1)SE IOS until Cisco fixes the bug.
This is my honest answer.

Given a Cisco switch with a genuinie Cisco transceiver running a relatively recent IOS such as you are, I'd suspect much more strongly that there is an interoperability problem with the "multiple rstp switches designed by a mining technology company". Are you able to contact the company that built them for technical support?
10-31-2011 12:13 PM
I am happy to report that this problem has been resolved by upgrading the cisco switch to 12.2-58SE2.
Thanks so much for everyone's ideas and help.
