is there anyone that can explain what is (are) the difference(s) between the two optics in the title ?
In particular what are the "unnecessary features" of the SFP-10G-LR-S ? Can they be used in UA to Core deployment ?

Please note that the S Class SFP's doesn't support FCoE.
how do you tell when looking at the part number if it is S class or C class or can you even do that. If not where is the class specified per part number in the data sheet?
S class transceivers have "-S" at the end of the SKU (Stock Keeping Unit, also known as part number).
SFP-10G-SR = most common non-S-class 10 Gbps transceiver
SFP-10G-SR-S = S-class version of the same

I was wondering the same thing. I'm looking for SFP+ modules to go from core to building distribution switches, and the cost of migrating from 10G X2 modules to SFP+ is insane!!
The Cisco S-class optics is compatible with non s-class optics, except that S-class optics has different temperature ranges.
And if you want to replace the X2 module with original SFP+ module, the total cost is high, but you can find a OEM vendor to help you out. I have bought compatible Cisco SFP+ modules from Fiberstore for just $16. You can have a try !
