I'm trying to decipher why some replacement SFP's we are receiving are returning a 'PID: unspecified' when a show inventory command is run.
Where the existing SFP's we have return the correct PID e.g PID: GLC-SX-MMD.
This issue also impacts the 'sh interface transceiver detail' command where the SFP's with the unspecified PiD fail to return any transceiver information on the fibre that they connect to, normally this should be operating temp, RX & TX alarms, temp, voltage, etc.
There seems to be no correlation between the serial numbers and the lack of this information.
There seems to be no detail in the IDPROM of the SFP to show whether they transmit this information, but a show IDP all details that the working SFP's have TRANSCEIVER_IDPROM & TRANSCEIVER_DATA where these two entries are omitted from the response on the non-working SFP's.
What I'm wanting to do is understand if this is a model, revision or manufacturing issue and be able to quickly identify before installation if they are unable to return transceiver information.
Thanks

Are the SFP's purchased from Cisco or are they 3rd party Cisco-compatible devices? 3rd party devices may not adhere to the same specifications as original Cisco equipment for stored PROM information.

Tom, That's what I'm trying to decipher.
We use a 3rd party to complete our on site activities & they supply the SFP's & Cabling (where we supply them with any switches or routers).
It seems that following any recent swaps, upon checking the transceiver information we' receive 'no transceivers present'.
I'm hoping to be able to understand from the serial no, which SFP manufacturers to avoid.
From reading elsewhere the production of SFP's isn't completed by Cisco but completed by licenced agents?
