autoanswering or forced autoanswering

On a Cisco voip phone is there a way to have the user attach a headset to the phone, but still stay on hook? When a call is presented to the phone can either the phone autoanswer, or can I set the phone to answer via the TAPI interface? Does the state of the hookswitch come into play? Is there any certain set that is required?

In CM 3.3 you can select "Auto Answer with Headset" as an option on a directory number.

Alternatively on a 7940 you just press the headset button to the left of the mute microphone, which leaves you onhook, but when lineAnswer() is called from tapi the phone picks up on headset rather than on speaker.
