What is the best ios and vcware to use on a as53000. We are getting alot of hiss in the calls, and some late and dropped packets.

kind of a loaded question. If you are getting late or dropped packets upgrading IOS and VCware is not going to help, the problem is in the core wan and Qos needs to be applied there. This asumes the 5300 is used only as a gateway and the ethernet interface is used as ingress/egres of ip leg of call. Hissing and static on line could be a layer 1 problem of T1 do a show controller t1 X and verify that all error counters are 0 and you see no line code or path code violations. LC or PC violations assuming the controller is configured correctly is indicative of a wiring problem (typically bad crimps, punchdowns, etc) if LC/PC violations are incrementing this is the source of the hissing.

The Hiss almost sounds like the comfort tone, But we do have no comfort tone and no vad set.

The hiss is alot like hissing periods symptom. Comes between speech.
