Just want to make sure this combination works. (i know 2.4.6 Unity will work with 3.1.x client).
Want to know this for sure since we don't want to upgrade everyone at the same time after migrating to 3.1.4.

Unfortunately, VMO 2.4.x will only work for Unity 2.4.6.x. You should upgrade to VMO ver 3.1.3, which is backwards compatible as you state.
Download and release notes are listed here:

Check the release notes for the Supported Product combination - it does not show VMO 2.4.6.x client working with Unity 3.x.

It may be a dumb question but Why wouldn't VMO 2.4.x work with the latest Unity server (3.1.4)? (is it different architecture-wise in communication between the client and server?) What I am hoping for is to be able to postpone the client install till after the server migration.

It might work, mostly, but the TRAP connection is what will burn you. If you're wanting to use the telephone to playback/record messages the TRAP server side stuff is different in 3.1 than in 2.4 and the TRAP client on the VMO form will likely have trouble. If you're not using TRAP it'll probably work OK, however TAC wont support you if you have problems... they'll require you to upgrade to the latest VMO client.
