Cert Requirements for DMS

I'm a alittle confused on what cert requirements there are with DMS. Do I need seperate certs for each server (DMM/S&S)? On either system it allows me to "Manage Certs for Entire System". Does that mean all of that server or the entire DMS solution? What type of cert should I use? Self signed or Signed or is that up to me?
