We want to setup a lab environment with a 3620 with NM-HDV-1E1, Callmanager 3.0, Unity and about 10 7960 Phones. I'm not sure how to handle fax communications. We'll have to receive the faxes over the E1 connection because the lab won't have any other telco connection. Cisco reseller helpline suggested to use 2 port fxo modules within the 3620 but I'm not sure if this would work. By my opinion the fxo modules are connected to the telco, or am I wrong?

Assumption:
1. E1 is used for incoming/outgoing fax.
2. Fax machine is connected to the gateway (e.g. cisco3620 router)
then, you should have a NM-2V + a VIC-2FXS installed in your gateway in order for the fax machine to connect. you are right that the fxo is for telco connectivity.

You need a FXS port on your Router, which will then send it over your E1 connection. You could also look at the Cisco ATA @ http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/pcat/186.htm
