Installing Exchange

I installed Exchange Admin. only on a customer's MCS7835 in a unified setup. Everything works, but now I want to install the rest of Exchange so they can store their VoiceMail messages on the Unity server, otherwise this storage will go to waste plus QOS will be much harder to implement using their server. My question is how to install Exchange now that the box is up. It's not yet in production. Do I just follow the install doc and install Exchange 2K? Will I have to unistall Exchange Admin.?<br><br>Thanks for any help!<br><br>

You can install Exchange on there in full without first uninstalling the admin piece, this should work fine.

However, I'm a little concerned with your assumption that you'll just store voice mails on here. If this is an existing Exchange site (sounds like it is) and folks already have email boxes setup and Outlook desktop connectivity, I'm not sure this is what you want. You need to move entire mailboxes over to the Unity server if you want to use it for storage (i.e. all their messages will be homed on the Unity box and their Outlook clients will need to attach to the Exchange on Unity which adds a bunch of overhead to the box).

If you're thinking of storing some voice mail only users on the Unity box, that's OK. But dumping Exchange on box and having users attach their Outlook clients to it will add a bunch of overhead and hurt performance if you're not careful. Make sure this is really what you want to do.

I'm thinking, perhaps incorrectly, that the Unity server should store voicemail. Is this not what would happen if Exchange was loaded? We have joined the customer's existing site and all is working well, but I'm thinking that with just Exchange admin loaded, that the customer's mail server is now storing everything and I have all of my server storage just hanging around. Please advise.

As mentioned in the previous post, voice mails are stored in the inbox of the subscriber. We don't drop voice mails somewhere special (this is unified messaging as opposed to a syncronized db model). All messages of all types (voice, fax, email) are stored in the inbox of the user which is in the Exchange private store on their home Exchange server. If you installed Exchange on the Unity box nothing changes at all unless you rehome some mail users on our box.
