We have recently changed the record format of our Unity system to G729 (from G711).

Users can listen to messages fine when they use View Mail. But when the double click on the .wav file attached to the email, all of the media players I have tried (WinAmp, Windows Media and Real Player) will not play the .wav file. I realize that I get an error message because this software is only licensed to playback G711.

Is anyone aware of a player that can read G729?
Or a workaround to this problem?

This is a problem for users on the road away from their LAN or VPN connection. They need to be able to listen to a message as a local file.

The g.729 codec that is used for Unity was licensed from Sipro Lab. While the g.729 codec is an ITU-T speech compression standard it is patented. This is why none of the free audio players (that I know of) support this codec.

I have already installed the G.729 drivers on user PC, and now I can listen to a G.729 message by Windows Media Player 7.0. The G.729 driver is obtained from the Unity CD and the Unity version is 3.1.3. I am now facing a problem that all PC cannot play G.729 message by Real Player. May I ask that whether Real Player 8.0 can play G.729 messaeg? Pls comment

You're treading into dangerous territory here... the 729a codec is licensed to be used with the VMO form only and should not be installed on client desktops. the codec on the CD is intended to be installed on the Unity server only. Users should be using VMO to play their voice mail messages at their desktops, not installing the 729a codec and using a 3rd party player.
We wont help you with compatibility issues with 3rd party players like this...

By the way, I would like to ask that some of the users will bring along their notebook for overseas trip. I am not sure whether those users, who are taking a overseas trip, can listen to G.729 voice message by VMO via Outlook ? Pls comment

Yes, VMO will play g.729 WAV files.

But I have one questino that when those users are taking overseas trip, how the VMO connect to the Unity? Their notebooks may be located from outside network, so how the VMO connect to their internal LAN Unity server over Internet?

I have one more question, from the previous posted message, G.729 codec is not supposed to be installed at client PC. So can we listen to a G.729 message via media player on client PC? And is VMO the only way to listen to a G.729 message from client PC?
pls comment

Yes. The only other option is to have unity place a call so you can listen to the message via the phone as opposed to the PC speakers.

I am sorry that may be my question is not clear enough, let me clarify again.
Now the g.729 codec is not supposed to be installed in client PC.
Q1) Can we still play a g.729 voice message by media player without a g.729 codec being installed in client PC machine?
Q2) For those overseas staff, is VMO the only way to listen to a g.729 voice message?
Q3) If VMO is the only way to play a g.729 voice message, so do we need to specify rules at firewall, which allow the overseas staff to connect to the internal LAN Unity server over Internet for voice mail?
Q4) If unity place a call to overseas staff for playing a voice message, does it mean that the Unity place a long distance call for playing a voice message?
many thanks

1. You do not need to install the G729a codec on the client machine for VMO to be able to play it... VMO has the g792a codec built in.
2. Yes, VMO is the only supported way to listen to g729a messages.
3. You don' t need to connect back to the corporate office to use Outlook. VMO will launch and play on the local speakers and use the local microphone to play such messages in Outlook no problem at all.
4. No, again, you can play messages with VMO over the phone OR via the local speakers and microphone. No long distance call is required.

Thanks for your help, but may I ask few more question just for confirmation?
1. Is G.729 not licensed to be installed in client PC?
2. Is VMO the only way to play a g.729 voice message?
3. Is Media Player neither nor Real Player not supported to play a g.729 voice message?
many many thanks

I'm pretty sure these are answered already along this thread.
1. No, the G729a client is not licensed to be installed on client machines.
2. Yes, VMO is the only supported way to play g.729 voice messages.
3. We do not support any 3rd party media player for playing g729a voice messages.
