In 4.0(1) you will have "FlexStack" which allows you to fiddle with FIFO/LIFO options for both new and read messages as well as dictate the order messages are presented to you by type (email, fax, voice, receipt) and urgency. should give you total control.
There's no option for this in 3.x and earlier, it's hard coded.
