Can someone please suggest a *FREE* utility to convert a wav file to a raw file. I have several wav files I'd like to make rings for.
I know Cooledit is one, but you have to pay for it :-(.
Any suggestions are welcome.
Thanks,
Dave

Hi Dave,
Well, I don't know about Cooledit, but I've been able to do it with Audacity. http://sourceforge.net/projects/audacity/ . It's not easy to use but eventually it does the job (I don't do it every day... but I managed to convert wav files to raw and it works well with my ip phones)
Regards,
Thierry

Try Windows Sound Recorder. Open the .wav file of interest, and select File, Save As. You'll have the option to change the format of the file. Change the "Save As Type" field to All Files, then change the file extension from .wav to .raw.

Thanks. I did try that, but the file just comes out as static. I'm not sure what exact settings I'm supposed to use. The ones in the documentation don't seem to be options in Windows Recorder or any other app that I can find.

Change the format to CCITT u-law,attributes should be 8.000 kHz, 8 Bit, Mono. Also make sure it is saved as a .raw file.

Windows Sound Recorder... I make rings all the time with it. 8khz, 8 bit, CCITT ULAW
Works perfect, I made a profile called VoIP RING that i could use to quickly convert to that format.
