With the older Unity software that still has Active Fax support, can you install Active Fax on a separate box that has Windows 2000 Professional as the operating system. The 2.4.6 installation manual states that the O.S. requirements for Active Fax on a separate server are NT 4.0 server, NT 4.0 workstation or Windows 2000. Does Windows 2000 mean server or 2000 professional? I have a customer that wants to move his Active Fax to a separate box but would like to save some money by buying Win 2K Professional instead of Server. Let me know and thanks in advance. <br><br>

Yes, lightning fax should be able to run on NT workstation or Windows Professional no problem. Be aware that QA never tested that configuration, but if LightningFax supports it (it does) then it should work OK.

I was more specifically questioning Cisco's (Active Voice) Active Fax. Someone must have tested it because the installation guide for 2.4.6 refers to it in there. The manual specifically states that Active Fax can be loaded on NT 4.0 server or Workstation but does not break it down for Windows 2000. It just says that it would work on Windows 2000, but does not say either server or professional. (Chapter 3 page 29 of the installation guide that comes with 2.4.6). I am trying to be specific only because the customer is providing the PC and the OS and does not want to buy Win 2K server (more expensive) if Professional will do. Thanks again for your research and prompt answers.

Well, ActiveFax IS LightningFax... it's not a special version or anything in the 2 box scenario. The only differnce is the licensing module (i.e. it rquires a security key on the 2nd fax box instead of a special license string fro the LightningFax folks). But as I mentioned, QA never tested the configuration you're looking for during the ActiveFax qualification in 2.4.5 so the official policy will likely be that it's not supported by TAC.

I hope I am not becoming a pain but as I mentioned in the last post Cisco's documentation in the installation guide of 2.4.6 does talk about the requirements for separate fax server O.S. If you are saying that it is not supported with the configuration I am inquiring about then why is it in the book? I am really just looking for clarification for what is in print regarding Win 2K in Chapter 3 page 29 of the 2.4.6 manual.

The docs say NT/Win2k Server... what I'm saying is QA never tested ActiveFax installed on a Win2K professional box. As such the official policy will be to not support it.
