SFP Fibre Module for SUP720 in 6509 Chassis and Fiber connection between 1Gbps and 10Gbps

Hi Everyone,

This is my first post, I am new in networking. I have 2 questions.

We have Cisco 6509 Chassis with Supervisor Blade WS-SUP720. We are getting new 10Gig connection (It will be 1gig until we will upgrade our supervisor blade)  from our ISP. I have SFP-10G-SR fiber module, which is not recognized by chassis. Upon search I have found out that we cant use this on 1gig port. Can you please advise me if that's true and if yes can you please suggest me some and lastly does that module have to be Cisco brand?

My 2nd question is again related to same chassis. Now if we sort out the above issue, will we encounter a problem as our chassis is supporting 1Gbps and our service provider router 6503, where I am patching my connection to is 10Gbps?

I will really appreciate your answers as soon as possible please.

I have SFP-10G-SR fiber module, which is not recognized by chassis. Upon search I have found out that we cant use this on 1gig port.

Supervisor card only has an SFP port.  This means that an SFP+ module won't work.  For an SR, the module to get is GLC-SX-MMD for 1 Gbps.

Now if we sort out the above issue, will we encounter a problem as our chassis is supporting 1Gbps and our service provider router 6503, where I am patching my connection to is 10Gbps?

You will need to get a module that will support 10 Gbps and supported on the supervisor card or chassis. If you only have the plain WS-SUP720 (and not the VS-S720) then this supervisor card can only support 1 Gbps.  This also means a separate line card will need to be purchased in order to support 10 Gbps.

Hi Leo,

Thanks for your reply. Really appreciate it.

Discussed it with my manager and conclusion is that for now we will be using Ethernet. But we are going to purchase new supervisor card "VS-S720-10G-3C". I can see some compatibility issues here.

Our 6509 is running on iOS software version 12.2(17r)SX5, to upgrade to above supervisor minimum requirement of software version is 12.2(33)SXH.

We may need to upgrade other cards aswell:

I have been searching on net so I can put everything together, if we go for upgrade to "VS-S720-10G-3C" supervisor card. Please if you don't mind put me in the right direction.

OMG.

Before making the decision to upgrade to VS-S720, please do the maths.  Cisco has announced the End-of-Sale for the VS-S720 back in January 2015.  So yeah, is it worth spending money to get an old line card?  Is it worth spending MORE money for SmartNet for a chassis and line cards that are already old?

Is it cheaper to get a new chassis, supervisor card and line cards in a bundle?
